Understanding nesting

Nesting is not just decorating a nursery. It is the work of setting up the systems — food, sleep, support, recovery supplies — that will carry a household through the first twelve weeks.

The four systems to set up in advance

Most of what makes the early weeks easier can be put in place before birth.

  • Food: a stocked freezer and a meal train
  • Recovery: peri bottle, pads, comfortable clothing, witch hazel pads
  • Sleep: a plan for who covers which window
  • Support: a postpartum doula, family, or a nesting party
